Indianapolis Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Mimms, to Meet with Medical Licensing Board in April for Medical Malpractice Allegations

Apr 20, 2023

Indianapolis, Indiana – Board members voted unanimously to suspend Mimms’ medical license for 90 days during a January 26 hearing that saw more than three hours of evidence and witness testimony. The original suspension was extended by another 90 days on March 23.

Mimms has a history of medical malpractice claims, with at least nine complaints filed against him since the beginning of this year. He performs general surgery, bariatric surgery, plastic surgery, cosmetic injections, laser skin treatments, and other cosmetic procedures at Advanced Surgery of Indiana.

“Surgeons are required to use a level of care practiced by other surgeons of the same specificity to prelude for the safety of their patients,” said Michael Holland, a personal injury attorney and partner at Tabor Law Firm, an Indianapolis law firm that handles medical malpractice cases. “Surgeons also have a duty to protect patients from suffering further injuries or complications after a procedure. Anyone who has been harmed due to suspected medical errors should contact a medical malpractice lawyer as soon as possible to find out about the possibility of recovering compensation.”

The Attorney General’s investigation into Mimms’ Indianapolis private practice uncovered numerous instances of potential negligence. The surgeon was accused of routinely performing surgeries in his office, which was not certified as an outpatient surgical facility. He also allegedly administered anesthesia to patients while doing surgery instead of having an anesthesiologist present.

When questioned about his surgical practices at the January hearing, Mimms claimed he had previously considered hiring an anesthesiologist. Anesthesiologists are trained medical professionals who specialize in delivering anesthesia and monitoring patient care before, during, and after a surgical procedure.

The medical malpractice claims against Mimms alleged that he had negligently performed cosmetic surgeries and liposuction that resulted in patients getting infections and sepsis, among other complications. A petition from the hearing outlined the case of a liposuction patient who was hospitalized four days after Mimms carried out the procedure. The patient developed sepsis and eventually died after doctors discovered their bowel was punctured.
